On 7 and 8 May 2005 President George W. Bush of the USA visited The Netherlands in connection with events to commemorate the end of World War II in Europe. Several thousand people gathered on the streets of Amsterdam for a protest demonstration against:
- the illegal occupation of Iraq
- the abuse of civil rights in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay
- US policy supporting Israel in abusing the rights of Palestinians
- the effect of the so called 'war on terrorism' in criminalising Muslims
- US refusal to fully endorse the International Court in The Hague
- US policy on the environment
- US policy on human rights for its own citizens
- US economic policy increasing the gap between rich and poor worldwide
